Experience drifting ice in the Sea of Okhotsk, Hokkaido

In the Sea of Okhotsk in northeastern Japan, drifting ice can be seen. The season of drifting ice is from January to March, and February of the previous year is the period of the most ice.

The starting point for enjoying the drifting ice is the net walking and the pattern. To go to Abashiri, you can take the flight to the Mumbai Airport and take a direct bus from the airport to the “Ice Icebreaker Pier”.

The time required is about 40 minutes. To go to the pattern, you can take the flight to the Okhotsk Monbey Airport and take the shuttle bus for 12 minutes to reach the city of Monbetsu.

To enjoy the drifting ice, you can take a dedicated sightseeing boat. Here is the southernmost tip of the world where you can visit the drifting ice. If you are lucky, you can meet the tiger head sea eagle and harbor seals from the far north sea. The average temperature in February in this region is minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit).

It is colder in the morning and evening, because the sea breeze will blow directly on the deck of the ship, so you must wear a winter jacket.

To enjoy the drifting ice in the pattern, you can take the icebreaker “GARINKO No. II” which sails from the port of Monbetsu. In winter, there are direct buses from the city’s bus terminal to the pier. GARINKO No. II adopts a full appointment system. Please call the office before the day before, or visit the terminal to make an appointment.

Both can be booked in English at a cost of 3,000 yen (1 adult, in the case of drifting ice. Half price for children). There are also many people who sign up for travel to their country’s travel agency or a tour group from Sapporo.
