How to get to Aso Volcano/Buy discount Tickets

About Aso Volcano

Aso Volcano is the generic name for a complex volcano with a caldera that is said to be 100 km or 120 km in circumference, and its caldera is said to be the largest in the world. The highest peak in the central crater is Takadake (1592 m). It is called “Higokuni” (meaning “country of Higo” in Japanese), and its elevation is easy to remember.
It straddles Ichinomiya-cho and Takamori-cho in Aso-gun, and is bordered on the west by Nakadake, a volcanically active mountain, and on the east by Nekodake across the Hinoo Pass. It is a stratovolcano composed of pyroxene andesite, with a complex and steep topography. The crater site is located to the south, the lava hill called Tengu-no-butai and the east peak to the east, and the main peak of Takadake to the west.

How to get there

From Kyushu Expressway Kumamoto IC, via R57 and Aso trail road Akamizu line, 1 hour and 20 minutes to the direction of the mountain top.

Tips

We were told that we could not visit the crater, but we were lucky to be able to see the crater as it was closed that day.
When we arrived at the crater parking lot, the smell of sulfur and the power of the crater was amazing.
The situation changes from moment to moment as to whether you can go to the crater or not, so I recommend that you check the information even just before you go.
