What’s the difference between Hokkaido and Tokyo-Osaka? Sapporo is the first stop for many people in Hokkaido, as it is the closest city to the New Chitose Airport and is also a hub for local cuisine. Let’s let us compile a list of food recommendations for you. What are the best foods to go with a beer at Sapporo in Hokkaido?

1.Soup Curry

Those of you who have studied a little bit about food will know that Japanese curry is very different from our Malaysian curry. Our curries are heavy, thick and spicy! But in fact, Japanese curry is on the mild side – even those who are not good at eating spicy food can eat one bite after another without worrying about “choking”.

When it comes to soup curry in Japan, Sapporo is actually the birthplace of soup curry, and there are over 200 shops in the city selling this soup curry, so both locals and tourists have their favourites. The soup is usually made with chicken bones and a variety of spices, and the freshness of the ingredients used is reflected in the refreshing but not boring taste. Customers can choose the soup according to their own taste and experience an authentic Japanese curry.

2.Genghis Khan Roast Lamb

The name “Genghis Khan” is not the name of a particular restaurant, but rather refers to the dish of “grilled lamb on a plate”. According to legend, during Genghis Khan’s conquests in the east and west, the officials in charge of the food service changed the roast lamb, which Genghis Khan often ate, into a barbecue with cut-up pieces in order to shorten his meal time and give him more rest. As the roast lamb was crispy, charred and not stinky or greasy, he loved it very much. So as time passed, it became the delicacy that it is today.

One of the best things to do in Sapporo in winter is to eat Sapporo’s famous roast lamb. The roast lamb is cooked in different ways, from dipping it in sauce to grilling it raw. But no matter how you cook it, it’s almost never too tasty and it’s absolutely amazing!

3.Shrimp and Venison

One of Hokkaido’s representative winter game is the “Ezo deer”, which inhabits all of Hokkaido, mainly in the eastern part of the island. Although it varies from region to region, the hunting period is generally between October and January. Wild Ezo deer can cause a certain amount of damage to the agricultural industry, so in order to effectively control their numbers, their capture has led to a number of creative dishes.

There are many different ways to eat Ebi venison, including grilled Ebi venison, Ebi venison ramen, Ebi venison spaghetti and Ebi venison burgers, all of which can be tasted in Sapporo. The low-fat, high-protein ebi venison, combined with its thick, lean flavour after careful preparation, is a source of deliciousness. If you’re in Sapporo during the winter, ask if they serve Ebi venison when you visit a restaurant.

4.Sapporo Beer

The universally known Sapporo Beer was actually the first beer to become popular in Japan, so Sapporo can be considered the birthplace of Japanese beer culture. The Sapporo Beer Museum, located in the Sapporo Beer Garden, used to be a beer factory, but after the brewery moved out, it became a museum with free admission and an additional fee for beer tastings.

How can you go without food when you have something to drink? The Sapporo Beer Garden also has a buffet restaurant inside, serving a variety of meats and seafood. If you’re a fan of a good meal and a good drink, you’ll feel like you’re in heaven here!

5.Miso Ramen

A must-try ramen in Japan is like a must-try coconut rice in Malaysia, you haven’t been here until you’ve had it! In particular, there are three main types of ramen in Japan, namely Hokkaido Sapporo Ramen, Fukuoka Hakata Ramen and Fukushima Kita Ramen. Hokkaido ramen can be divided into three main schools: Sapporo miso ramen, Asahikawa soy sauce ramen and Hakodate salt-flavoured ramen, each with its own distinctive taste. If you’re in Sapporo, you’ll want to try the authentic miso flavours! You won’t forget the rich, unctuous flavour.

6.Salmon eggs

Who, like me, was resistant to and scared of the sensation of the “eggs” bursting in your mouth before you visited Japan? But I have to tell you, once you’ve been to Hokkaido and tasted the goodness of salmon roe, you can’t describe the sensation of salmon roe bursting in your mouth, as if you’re floating in the sea.

The salmon roe donburi (salmon roe + rice) in Sapporo is made with very real ingredients, and the salmon roe is so full that you don’t know how to use a spoon. Some restaurants also have a special way of serving salmon eggs, giving customers a bowl of white rice and then taking out a huge jar full of salmon eggs and adding them to the white rice, ladle by ladle, until the crystal clear salmon eggs come out, making it a feast for the palate and the eyes!

7.Crab

When you visit Hokkaido in winter, you can’t go wrong with the seasonal crab! A good meal of fresh, sweet and non-fishy, Q-tip crab with rich crab paste in a warm shop …… believes there should not be a happier treat than this, right?

Sapporo in particular has a number of seafood all-you-can-eat restaurants, which usually feature fresh king crab, hairy crab and loose leaf crab. If you’re not interested in all-you-can-eat, but are willing to spend the money and value the service and atmosphere, you can also choose a restaurant that specialises in crab dishes. Experience a variety of ways to eat crab with different preparations such as special crab tofu, crab sushi, crab bulgur and crab sukiyaki.

8.Japanese BBQ

The key to good roast meat is not only the grilling technique, but also the freshness of the meat itself, and Sapporo uses only high-quality meat and takes great care in handling the ingredients, especially the offal. If you like roast meat, you may want to spend a little more money to visit a fancy restaurant and try the famous Kurobuta Wagyu beef, which has an even distribution of oil and melts in your mouth without a hint of fishy taste. A gentle reminder that if you want to go to a popular restaurant, it’s best to make a reservation in advance!

9.Sushi

The next recommendation for sushi country is sushi (laughs)! Why do you think we’re recommending such “ordinary” food? It’s because one of the most important things about sushi is the freshness of the ingredients. Since all the fresh ingredients in Hokkaido come together in Sapporo, the abundance of seafood makes for delicious sushi, so how can you go wrong? You can find everything from fancy sushi restaurants to affordable rotisserie sushi, so follow your travel itinerary and find a sushi restaurant that is convenient and tasty!

10.Rum Grape Ice Cream Sandwich

What are the must-have souvenirs when you go to Hokkaido? Apart from the Three Fries and White Lovers, which you can buy at the airport, you can’t go wrong with the Rokkatei Rum Graham Crackers, which you can only get in Hokkaido! Made with 100% Hokkaido fresh milk and aromatic rum sultanas, men and women alike will love this deep dessert (laughs).

Of course, when you visit Rokkatei’s Sapporo main shop for souvenirs, we recommend the café on the first floor for dessert and coffee. For dessert, we recommend the Rum Grape Ice Cream Sandwich, which has a rich, creamy flavour with a hint of rum.
